Tracking Academic Progress: A Look at Our Mathematics Grade Averages (2018-2024) at Thembelihle School
At Thembelihle School, we are deeply committed to nurturing the potential of every child in our care, and a key part of this is tracking their academic progress. We believe that a strong foundation in subjects like Mathematics is crucial for future success. We’re excited to share insights from our latest data, illustrating the journey of our students in Mathematics from 2018 to 2024.
Our “Mathematics Yearly Grade Averages (2018 – 2024)” graph provides a clear snapshot of performance across Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7.
Current Standing of Mathematics at Thembelihle School
Based on the graph above, results show a notable trend where learners in the lower grades tend to outperform learners in the higher grades. This can be a result of the significant transformation that occurs as learners progress from the lower to the upper grades. In the early years, maths concepts are often tangible and concrete, allowing learners to engage with physical materials and real-world examples. However, as learners advance to higher grades, maths becomes increasingly abstract, requiring the development of higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies.
Consistent Excellence in Early Learning: Grade 1
Our Grade 1 students consistently demonstrate impressive aptitude in Mathematics. Their yearly averages have remained remarkably stable and high, generally hovering between 65% and 75%. This consistency is a testament to the strong foundational learning provided in our early grades and the dedication of our educators in fostering a love for numbers from a young age.
Growth and Resilience in Middle Grades: Grade 4
The performance of our Grade 4 students shows a dynamic journey. While their averages have fluctuated, typically ranging from the high 50s to the low 60s, there’s a clear upward trend in the later years, indicating continued growth and resilience as they tackle more complex concepts. This highlights the importance of sustained support as students advance through their primary school years.
Building Foundational Strength in Senior Primary: Grade 7
For our Grade 7 students, Mathematics presents a significant challenge, as is often the case with this transition phase. Their averages generally fall in the 50s range. However, their performance has shown stability, and in some years, slight improvements. This underscores the vital role of dedicated academic support in helping our older students master foundational skills for high school.
Focus Areas for 2025:
To address these trends and continue fostering mathematical excellence, our key focus areas for 2025 include:
- Increase student engagement and motivation: Encourage learner participation, enthusiasm, and confidence, leading to improved motivation and reduced anxiety about Mathematics.
- Develop critical thinking and problem solving: Foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and promote critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
- Enhance teacher professional development: Provide opportunities for Mathematics teachers to develop their pedagogical skills, content knowledge, and use of technology (especially with the new Smart Board initiative) to enhance teaching and learning.
We are incredibly proud to celebrate the individual achievements of our students who have excelled in Mathematics:
- Sabelo, a Grade 7 pupil, is our top Mathematics achiever and has achieved an outstanding average of 87% throughout the year. Furthermore, he excelled in his final examinations, scoring an impressive 98%. This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to Sabelo’s dedication, hard work, and exceptional mathematical ability.
- Mawande, a Grade 6 learner, exemplifies academic excellence, achieving 1st position in Mathematics with an average of 91%. This outstanding achievement demonstrates the potential for exceptional academic performance among our learners.
- Melokuhle has shown dedication and perseverance throughout the year. His determination and passion for Mathematics has remained unwavering, even in the face of challenges. In the final term, Melokuhle’s hard work paid off as he achieved an outstanding 90%, securing his position as the top Mathematics student in Grade 4.
